Congratulations to our Long Island Youth Ocean Conservation Summit Grant Recipients!

​​On November 19, 2016, Coastal Steward, Inc and Stony Brook University’s School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences hosted the second annual Long Island Youth Ocean Conservation Summit – bringing together young leaders from across Long Island and New York to develop plans of action to protect local marine and aquatic ecosystems. We’re excited to support our Long Island summit participants conservation project plans with funding through our mini-grant program. This year’s Long Island mini-grant recipients are:

• Zariel M., whose Party SmART project will incorporate cleanup efforts and the use of marine debris to create educational art to highlight the importance of preventing plastic pollution.
• Mount Sanai High School’s Craft for Critters project which will engage high school students in creating educational lessons/craft activities focused on marine conservation to share with preK-elementary age students.
• Brigid H., whose Oceans Spirits project will target aquarium hobbyists and pet stores, encouraging the use of captive bred marine fish for aquariums.
• Julianne S. who will conduct a research study on the impacts of ocean acidification on oysters while educating the public on steps they can take to address this issue and reduce their carbon dioxide emissions.  
• Ava W. whose H.H.S: No Plastic Mess campaign will work to implement the first plastic recycling program in her high school to complement existing paper recycling initiatives.
