On November 19, 2016, Coastal Steward, Inc and Stony Brook University’s School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences hosted the second annual Long Island Youth Ocean Conservation Summit – bringing together young leaders from across Long Island and New York to develop plans of action to protect local marine and aquatic ecosystems. We’re excited to support our Long Island summit participants conservation project plans with funding through our mini-grant program. This year’s Long Island mini-grant recipients are:

  • Zariel M., whose Party SmART project will incorporate cleanup efforts and the use of marine debris to create educational art to highlight the importance of preventing plastic pollution.
  • Mount Sanai High School’s Craft for Critters project which will engage high school students in creating educational lessons/craft activities focused on marine conservation to share with preK-elementary age students.
  • Brigid H., whose Oceans Spirits project will target aquarium hobbyists and pet stores, encouraging the use of captive bred marine fish for aquariums.
  • Julianne S. who will conduct a research study on the impacts of ocean acidification on oysters while educating the public on steps they can take to address this issue and reduce their carbon dioxide emissions.
  • Ava W. whose H.H.S: No Plastic Mess campaign will work to implement the first plastic recycling program in her high school to complement existing paper recycling initiatives.

Congratulations to our Long Island mini-grant recipients! Stay tuned for updates on their conservation work!

Over the last six years we’ve worked to support and connect young conservation leaders around the world who are taking action to protect our blue planet. As a continuation of this work, we’re excited to launch the Youth Ocean Conservation Summit Expeditions program in an effort to provide an exciting opportunity for Summit alumni to reconnect in the field to explore marine environments. Through this program, Summit alumni will build connections with fellow young conservationists while working alongside marine scientists, researchers, educators, and conservationists to actively protect critical marine environments.

You’re invited to be part of the inaugural Youth Ocean Conservation Summit Expedition at Biscayne National Park in south Florida! From March 17-19, 2017, twenty Youth Ocean Conservation Summit alumni ages 14 and up will camp out on Elliott Key, the largest island in Biscayne National Park. There will be opportunities to explore the island's subtropical hardwood hammock, nearshore seagrass beds and rocky shorelines while learning about the park's challenges from rangers and scientists. You'll also have the opportunity to network with other young people (like you!) who are making, or seek to make, a difference for the world's marine ecosystems in a fun, casual and beautiful setting.

Due to limited space, participants will be selected through a brief application based on a 150 word paragraph on why they want to be part of the field camp. Those selected will be responsible for getting themselves to and from Biscayne National Park's Visitor Center near Homestead Florida, for providing their own personal gear (to include bedding), and a registration fee of $50 to cover the costs of provided food. The Field Camp will provide boat transport to the island, tents, food/drink and logistical support.
